Unlike other agricultural crops, cannabis is not regulated or protected by federal government agencies. Because of this, there is no federal oversight regarding the pesticides that are utilized in its cultivation. Luckily, states such as Colorado and California have taken steps to enforce which pesticide products can be used under state cannabis regulatory laws.
Both states have created lists of acceptable and unacceptable products. Among the acceptable products, you will find things such as sulfur, citric acid, and several biopesticides. Biopesticides, unlike traditional pesticides, utilize natural chemicals, compounds, and living microorganisms to fight off pests that love to make cannabis plants their personal buffets.
This is exciting, considering that chemical pesticides present several different health risks and could cause a plethora of issues if utilized on plants that are consumed in any manner. The cannabis sector in these states could play a leading role in a much more significant shift when it comes to how agricultural crops are protected against potential pests and biological irritants.
Not only are biopesticides better for crops, the environment and consumers, they also have the ability to be used in conjunction with one another to fight off a plethora of issues.
One company, however, is focused on building a “suite of microbes” that will provide protection from a wide range of pests and naturally occurring plant diseases. It’s an all-in-one product that would be safe for all agricultural crops. This company, known as Marrone Bio Innovations (MBI), was founded by Pam Marrone.
According to Pam, she founded the company to “discover and develop effective and environmentally responsible, biologically-based products for pest management and plant health.” After teaming up with Albaugh last year, MBI’s products are being used on millions of acres of food crops this year, in addition to many cannabis crops in legal states.
Could cannabis lead the way in a major agricultural shift? Absolutely, and it seems that it already is!
